24岁的乔纳森是纽约曼哈顿的一家建筑设计所的设计师，每天过着循规蹈矩的生活，并会对着公寓里的一台摄影机，记录下这一天的日∑ 程。原来看似古怪的乔纳森还有另一重人格——他入睡几小时后，会变身为约翰继续生活。约翰同样也会用录像来向乔纳森讲述自己的生活。乔纳森无意之中发现约翰有一个交往对象埃琳娜，这有悖于他和◤约翰之间不可以谈恋爱的约定。约翰表示无法接受乔纳森苦行僧一样的生活，一气之下不再为乔纳森拍摄录像。在几轮恶作剧之后，乔纳森和埃琳娜之间同样产生了感情。乔纳森向医生娜丽曼陈述了原委，并说出自己的担忧——他怕约翰将历史重演，移除掉乔纳森这一重人格。约翰趁着自己的活动时间，大闹乔纳森的办公室。在和约翰的对抗中，乔纳森逐渐败下阵来，他存在的时段越来越少，直到整个“乔纳森”都消失殆★尽，约翰将带着对他的怀念继续人生。
